Dr. Dan Anderson Modesto Chiropractor discusses “WHIPLASH INJURY”

So what is whiplash? If you have had it you know the pain associated with it.But lets take a minute to discuss what happents if you or someone you know has experienced it.
Whiplash trauma usually injures the joints of your neck. A joint is created where two bone meet. Joints allow these bones to move in relationship to eachother. Ligaments attach on each side of these joints and hold the bones together , they stableize them and help prevent the joint from moving too far. Unfortunately when an injury occurs, the ligaments have been stretched, the bones moved to a point that caused ligamentous injury. Ligament injury equals a sprain.
Muscles also cross these joints in your neck. Muscles insert across your joints and provide the power to move you spine. These muscles can also be injured at the origin and insertions on the spine or in the belly of the muscles during a whiplash. A muscle injury is called a strain. Whiplash trauma can injure both the ligaments (sprain) and the muscles (strain).
The cervical spine has 7 vertebra. Your spine protects your nervous system. A system that controls every cell, tissue and organ in your body. Your cervical spine has the ability to move in different directions. Your spine flexes forward toward your chest, backwards toward your back, sideways toward your shoulders and rotational allowing you to look left or right. If you experience a whiplash injury,
your cervical spine may have been injured in any one or more of these directions. The spine does a fantastic job of protecting our nervous system, and our discs allow for all the movement we discussed above. Any injury to these ligaments or discs require medical intervention. The worst thing to do if you have experienced an injury is to not seek professional medical/chiropractic treatment. The body will heal from injuries, but may do so with scar tissue, and set the injured joints up for premature degeneration. The good news is correct management of whiplash can result in a normal return to the activities you normally do and enjoy.

In a very interesting article in FYI living, the author clearly paints a different picture. In fact the peer reviewed study clearly shows that working more than 11 hours per day increased the chance for CORONARY HEART DISEASE BY 67%. Coronary heart disease is now the number one killer in the United States. So what is most important here is to remember, whether this study is completely accurate or not, working long hours will defineately increase your chances of coronary heart disease. So what can and should you do?
Start with good eating habits. I suggest eating 6 meals per day. Balance carbohydrates and protein. There are many great ways to do this. We use 2 fantastic programs in our office. Modesto Chiropractor discusses “Pain In The Neck”

that neck pain has many causes, and many ways to treat it. My goal here today is to discuss what you can do

to help prevent it from happening in the first place”. As a chiropractor in Modesto treating patients for 18 years,

he recommends that everyone has their spine evaluated. This starts with a complete examination. This includes

evaluating your range of motion and performing orthopedic testing. Dr. Anderson performs a painless Surface EMG

to find out how the muscles and nervous system are functioning. Radiological tests follow.(X-Rays) if needed.

After this information is derived, Dr. Anderson discusses the findings with each patient.

Dr. Anderson stresses that prevention is the key, and offers these tips to avoid acute or chronic neck pain.

The first tip is to start doing daily stretching exercises. This will help loosen tight muscles and ligaments and get t

he cervical spine active. Two good stretches are the “sitting chin tuck”, and” lying chin tuck” Dr. Anderson explains that

the sitting chin tuck is easy and done by simply tucking your chin toward your chest while keeping your head from

moving forward. The “lying chin tuck” is done by lying on your back and lifting your neck off the ground toward your

chest and holding up to 10 seconds. Start with 10 repetitions and work up to a hold time of 20 seconds. The repetitions can

be increased as your mobility and strength increases. Dr. Anderson cautions not to strain your neck with these exercises.

If you have pain or fatigue stop.  Take note on how long it took for you to experience fatigue or how many repetitions you

performed and modify your exercises.  Modesto’s Chiropractor Dr. Anderson advises to always start with the “sitting

chin tuck” first. Dr. Anderson states that research has shown that muscles in our neck once injured by repetitive trauma or acute

injury will heal incorrectly without proper treatment. This sets the stage for  poor spine mobility and muscle weakness. By first

“balancing ” the weak muscles and increasing their endurance , will allow a nice progression to more difficult exercises. Modesto’s
